The great adventure story tells of Odysseus, a veteran of the Trojan War, who - through a landscape peopled with monsters, sea nymphs, evil enchantresses, and vengeful gods - makes his tortuous way home to his faithful wife, Penelope. Shipwrecked numerous times, faced with apparently insurmountable obstacles, offered the temptations of ease, comfort, and even immortality, Odysseus remains steadfast and determined. Themes of courage and perseverance, fidelity and fortitude are woven into the rich tapestry of danger, disaster, and ultimate triumph. Written by the blind poet, Homer, in the 8th century B.C., The Odyssey is the foundation for modern European literature.

How Homeric of you, Euripides - should we beware of Greeks bearing gifts?

This, unfortunately, is a terrible translation. There are many translations available, and although this is the most recent, it is dreadful. Thank you for uploading it, however.
The Murray translation, revised, and the Lattimore are far and away the best translations of Homer to date. For some reason Lattimore had a knack for translating Homer in blank quasi-verse. Murray’s is in prose. Happy New Year.

I love love this translation, it’s really clear English, the most lucid of 6 translations I’ve looked at. Perhaps textual fidelity is the trade-off? Look at one difficult passage to see why.
Compare Wilson:
“But Lord Poseidon rages, unrelenting, because Odysseus destroyed the eye of godlike Polyphemus, his own son, the strongest of the Cyclopes—whose mother, Thoösa, is a sea nymph, child of Phorcys, the sea king”
To Lattimore:
“It is the Earth Encircler Poseidon who, ever relentless, nurses a grudge because of the Cyclops, whose eye he blinded; for Polyphemos like a god, whose power is greatest over all the Cyclopes. Thoosa, a nymph, was his mother, and she was daughter of Phorkys, lord of the barren salt water.”
Claire Danes is easy to listen to, although some of her pronunciations of proper nouns is unconventional.

A feminist rendering of Homer that should have been entitled “Wilson’s Odyssey”
