One hot spring, the devil arrives in Moscow, accompanied by a retinue that includes a beautiful naked witch and an immense talking black cat with a fondness for chess and vodka. The visitors quickly wreak havoc in a city that refuses to believe in either God or Satan. But they also bring peace to two unhappy Muscovites: one is the Master, a writer pilloried for daring to write a novel about Christ and Pontius Pilate; the other is Margarita, who loves the Master so deeply that she is willing literally to go to hell for him. What ensues is a novel of inexhaustible energy, humor, and philosophical depth.

I haven’t read this translation. (I personally prefer Michael Glenny’s). Could anyone who might have encountered it leave a comment about its quality? Thanks. :)

Yes, I checked before uploading. Your upload had a low bitrate so I went ahead and uploaded this one which has lossless encoding.

An odd one, & a great one. Many shades/creative ambiguities. How to write a work of art under savage, ideological totalitarianism?
Tell all the truth but tell it slant โ
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth’s superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind โ

Euripdes, perhaps have a look at the articles below (if links are allowed!). I’ve only read the Glenny translation and was surprised to see the comment on the listserv:
“he skips things he doesn’t understand; as Simon Karlinsky noted in a NYTimes review, at one point he turns a bath into a female character. (Not even Woland could do that).”

@whitehedge:
Opinions usually seem to be divided on translations (especially of Russian works because of the sheer easily accessible volume of it), and since translation is not an exact science, I doubt we can come to conclusion that satisfies everyone and that’s fine.
“he skips things he doesnโt understand” - Constance Garnett was also often accused of this. I remember there being a great deal of criticism directed towards her work, and then there seemed to be some sort of resurgence in Garnett-appreciation. Pevear and Volokhonsky were criticised just as harshly, yet many people love them.
At the end of the day, those of us who read for pleasure, read the translations we enjoy. *shrugs*
(I personally love these articles bashing one translator or another - https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2005/11/07/the-translation-wars)
