Publisher’s summary
Sir Francis Bacon, sometimes known as the father of empiricism, was one of the major political figures of his day, his career culminating as Lord Chancellor under King James I in 1617. Bacon wrote widely, but it is the Essays (published in its third edition in 1625, the year before his death) for which he is best known. Deftly written and often displaying a cutting wit, they cover a wide range of subjects including death, love, marriage, ambition and atheism.
Bacon described the Essays as “recreations of my other studies”, and clearly drew on the ideas of earlier thinkers and writers, particularly Aristotle and Michel de Montaigne. The work had much influence on later generations and on the development of the English essay.

I don’t think there is anything quite like Bacon’s essays anywhere else in English. They are just so ‘full of meat’ as the contemporary idiom would put it: the language is packed out with meaning to a level few other writers would even attempt.
I fell in love with them in my mid-teens, and was waved on to Montaigne by an unusually cultured French teacher. But Montaigne was always careful to keep his language comprehensible, Francis Bacon doesn’t care if you understand him or not.
I can’t imagine what these rebuses must be like as an audiobook, but I can’t wait to find out.

They’re dense and you’ll probably need to go through footnotes to get the most out of them. Even when you think you understand, language has changed so much that you may not get the meaty gist of the intended meaning. They are difficult but I don’t know that Bacon intentionally tried to make them make them obscure and laconic or if that’s just how he wrote what seemed straightforward to him. All his stuff is fairly impenetrable to modern readers without some aid though there might be some cogent passages. He does argue in one of his essays to not read too much and rather do mindful reading. Give it a go. But you’ll probably need a few re-reads.
