This is awesome. Maybe not everybody’s favourite.

A friend of mine described this as a huge jumbo jet, taxiing on and on without ever taking off. I almost gave up on it many times. But Richardson has his charms, especially the portraits of Lovelace, a rake and a rogue for the ages. But it’s about character and effects of feeling — “mortification” perhaps chief among them. As Dr. Johnson wrote, ‘If you were to read Richardson for the story, your impatience would be so much fretted that you would hang yourself’
