Continuing where Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1885) left off, ‘Beyond Good and Evil…’ attacks the notion of morality as simply institutionalised weakness. German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche criticises past European philosophers for their unquestioning acceptance of moral precepts, founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. Nietzsche also singles out Bacon, Hobbes, Hume and Locke as representing what he calls a “debasement and devaluation of the concept ‘philosopher’ for more than a century.”
