Reading up on the novel, it turns out that it was rewritten quite significantly in 1810 to eliminate interracial relationships from the story – at the behest of the author’s father, who did not approve. This audio book appears to be of this revised edition (as does every other edition I’ve found online).
It would be very interesting to have the original version of the book.
